Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for art and creativity. Aunt Denise was a nurse, who was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an instrument for social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially aware and taught her to say something through the arts. Even though DuVernay lived in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations.
