Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for art and creativity. Aunt Denise was a nurse, who was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an instrument for social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially aware and taught her to say something through the arts. Even though DuVernay lived in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. In 1990, she completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood CA. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism at the age of a student. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage at the home that belonged to a member of the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. She was hired in 1999 and launched her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency.
